As much as I hate to be involved in semi-off-topic threads...
In Imagine, it was called "Loc" meaning local and it was either on
(dolly) or off (not.) Local meaning "move this object/icon by it's local
coordinates rather than by the universal ones." I didn't even think of
it as the function we're discussing here until I saw the 'dolly'
postings. Okay, it's out of my system now... :)
